Robert Griffin III Wins 2011 Heisman Trophy

Robert Griffin III won the 77th Heisman Trophy, becoming the first ever Baylor player to win the prestigious award.

RG3 made Baylor Bears history, when he became the first athlete from the university to ever win the Heisman. Griffin won the 77th Heisman Trophy, after having an unbelievable junior year for the Bears. When Griffin claimed the prestigious award, he walked up on stage, and showed his superman socks. Griffin was the Superman to the Bears this season, leading them to a 9-3 record and a chance to play in the Valero Alamo Bowl.

Although for the majority of the season, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck was the frontrunner for the Heisman, it wasn't even close. RG3 lead the nation with a  quarterback rating of 192.3. He also threw for 3998 yards and 36 touchdowns, while only throwing six interceptions. In addition, Griffin rushed for 644 yards and nine touchdowns.

 Before Griffin's arrival at BU, the Bears averaged three wins a season over the last ten years. The team never got more than five wins in a season. Now, Griffin has turned around the program, and has made Baylor an appealing place to go for recruits.

Last season as a sophomore, RG3 led Baylor to a 7-6 record, and their first bowl game in over 15 years.

Under coach Art Briles, Griffin excelled in the Bears passing attack. This season, Baylor threw for the fifth most yards in the country and also scored on average the sixth most points per game at 44 points. If Griffin were to enter the draft this upcoming year, he'd leave Baylor with 46 school records.

Griffin's Heisman campaign began Week One, when he led Baylor to an upset win over TCU. Griffin threw for 359 yards and five touchdowns in the decisive win.

Another highlight of Griffin's season was a 45-38 win over (5) Oklahoma. In the upset win, Griffin threw for 479 yards and four touchdowns, but also ran for 72 yards. Griffin's Heisman moment in the game came when he led Baylor on a game-winning drive with under a minute to play, connecting with Terrance Williams for a 34 yard touchdown.

Before this year, no player in Baylor history had ever finished better than fourth place in Heisman voting, and that was back in 1963.

In second place, came Luck, the preseason favorite for the award. Following him in third, was Alabama running back Trent Richardson. Wisconsin running back Montee Ball finished in fourth, and behind him was LSU corner back Tyrann Mathieu.

Griffin collected 405 first place votes, and finished with 1,687 points. Luck got 247 first place votes, and finished with 1,407 points.

Along with the Heisman Trophy, RG3 also took home the Davey O'Brien Award, which is given out to the best quarterback in the country.

With one last game to go to finish off an amazing junior year, Griffin and the Bears take on Washington in the Valero Alamo Bowl.
